Florida men plead guilty to charges related to Jan. 6 Capitol riot

Summary

Two Florida men, Tom Vournas and Leonard Lobianco, have pleaded guilty to charges related to their involvement in the January 6, 2021 Capitol riot. Both men, identified as members of a local Proud Boys chapter, participated in the violent disruption of the congressional session that was certifying the 2020 presidential election results.

On the day of the riot, Vournas and Lobianco, along with around 100 other Proud Boys, marched from the Washington Monument to the Capitol. Prosecutors have detailed that Vournas used pepper gel against Capitol police, injuring an officer, while both men were involved in breaching police lines and entering the Capitol building. They are scheduled to be sentenced in January 2024, as part of a broader crackdown that has seen over 1,000 individuals charged in connection with the Capitol breach.
