Theo Lengyel Found Guilty of First-Degree Murder in Girlfriend's Death

Summary

Theobald “Theo” Lengyel, a founding member of the experimental rock band Mr. Bungle, has been found guilty of first-degree murder in the death of his girlfriend, Alice “Alyx” Kamakaokalani Herrmann. The jury in Santa Cruz reached the verdict after hearing evidence that included a chilling audio recording from Herrmann’s phone, which captured the moments leading up to her murder on December 4, 2023.

The case against Lengyel was significantly bolstered by the audio file, which prosecutors discovered during the trial. This recording revealed a heated argument between the couple, escalating to threats and ultimately, Herrmann pleading for her life as she was strangled. The investigation began after Herrmann was reported missing, leading authorities to find her remains in Berkeley, California, a month later. Lengyel, who was arrested shortly after her disappearance, faces a potential life sentence when he is sentenced in November. His departure from Mr. Bungle in 1996 followed a period of creative differences with the band, which he did not rejoin during their recent reunion tours.
