Myanmar soldiers assist in cleanup efforts following Typhoon Yagi

The aftermath of Typhoon Yagi has severely impacted Myanmar, with reports indicating that nearly 150,000 people have been affected by the floods and landslides. The military government, led by Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, has mobilized soldiers, police, and fire brigade personnel to assist in recovery operations, particularly in regions like Naypyitaw, Shan States, Mandalay, and Bago. Cleanup efforts are focused on vital community facilities such as schools, hospitals, and Buddhist monasteries, while medical teams are also providing health care services to those in need. According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA), an estimated 887,000 individuals, including those already displaced, require urgent assistance, including food, clean water, and shelter. The ongoing civil conflict in Myanmar complicates these humanitarian efforts, as communication and access to affected areas remain challenging.

Casualties and Damage

The death toll from Typhoon Yagi in Myanmar has surpassed that of other Southeast Asian countries affected by the storm, with Vietnam reporting nearly 300 deaths and Thailand 42. The widespread destruction includes homes, water sources, and electricity infrastructure, as well as significant damage to schools and farmland.
