Widespread impact of contagious diseases in Gaza due to inadequate sanitation and healthcare access

Summary

The widespread impact of contagious diseases in Gaza is primarily attributed to inadequate sanitation and limited access to healthcare services. As a result of ongoing conflict and blockades, a significant portion of the population has been exposed to unsanitary conditions, leading to a public health crisis that affects millions.

Health Crisis in Gaza

Approximately 75% of Gaza’s population, which totals around 2.3 million, has been infected with contagious diseases due to a lack of proper sanitation and hygiene facilities. The deteriorating conditions have been exacerbated by open sewage and insufficient access to clean water, leaving many residents vulnerable to health risks. The World Health Organization has reported that the denial of medical supplies has critically endangered the lives of at least 350,000 chronically ill patients who require urgent treatment.

Access to Medical Care

The ongoing siege has severely restricted access to healthcare, with many medical facilities rendered inoperative. Reports indicate that over 114 hospitals and clinics have been affected, significantly impacting the ability to treat patients suffering from both chronic conditions and injuries sustained during the conflict. The situation is dire for cancer patients and others who need specialized treatments, as many are unable to leave Gaza for necessary care.

Consequences of Poor Sanitation

The dire sanitation conditions have forced residents to resort to drinking contaminated water, exacerbating the spread of diseases. With only 1.5 to 1.8 liters of water available per person per day, far below the WHO recommended minimum of 100 liters, the population faces a severe water crisis. This lack of clean water and proper sanitation facilities is a critical factor in the public health emergency affecting Gaza, contributing to the prevalence of contagious diseases and further straining the already overwhelmed healthcare system.
