New greenhouse gas projections in Colorado

Summary

New Greenhouse Gas Projections in Colorado

Recent projections indicate that Colorado is making progress in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, although it is still expected to fall short of its ambitious reduction targets for 2025 and 2030. A revised report from the state’s climate policy team suggests that improvements in data collection and modeling have resulted in a smaller gap between current emissions levels and the state’s goals.

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment’s latest report reveals that while the state is not on track to meet its greenhouse gas benchmarks, the situation is more favorable than previously thought. The revisions were prompted by corrections in historical data from the oil and gas sector and changes in modeling based on new land use legislation aimed at concentrating housing developments near jobs and transit. As a result, Colorado is projected to emit 117.6 megatons of carbon dioxide equivalent by 2025 and 86.1 megatons by 2030, compared to the targets of 113.3 megatons and 76.5 megatons, respectively. This progress is crucial as Colorado aims to combat climate change and improve air quality, particularly in areas struggling with pollution.
